To account for the 11-day discrepancy between the Julian and Gregorian calendars, the date September 2, 1752, will be followed by September 14, 1752. However, this calendar change is wildly unpopular with conservative Tories. As the story goes, furious mobs rioted throughout England on the night the changes took effect.
