Mar 28, 2024 · Adam Naruszewicz was a Polish poet and historian who was the first Polish historian to use modern methods of scholarship. As a young man, Naruszewicz entered the Jesuit order and taught in Warsaw at the Jesuit college. After 1773 he became a lay priest and in 1788 was made bishop of Smolensk.

views 3,486,433 updated. Adam Stanislaw Naruszewicz (ä´däm stänēs´läf närōōshĕ´vēch), 1733–96, Polish historian. A Jesuit, he became, after the suppression of his order, bishop of Smolensk (1788) and of Lutsk (1790). At the court of Stanislaus II he held a position similar to poet laureate.
In 1772-1773 Adam Naruszewicz, one of most outstanding representatives of Polish Enlightenment, wrote the first complete translation of all Tacit’s works. The study is devoted to Naruszewicz’s translation work on the texts of Roman historian.
