The daughter of Peter the Great's half brother and co-tsar for seven years, Ivan V, she spent her adult life residing alternately in St. Petersburg and in the duchy of Courland.
Anna Ioannovna was a widow who became the autocratic Empress of Russia in 1730, after the death of Peter the Great. She ruled for 17 years, until 1740, when she died of a stroke. She was influenced by her favorite minister Ernst Johann von Biron, who exercised great power over her and the state. She suppressed conspiracies, expanded the military and the economy, and faced war with the Ottoman Empire and the Polish king.
