Arthur Leonard Schawlow (May 5, 1921 – April 28, 1999) was an American physicist and co-inventor of the laser with Charles Townes. His central insight, which Townes overlooked, was the use of two mirrors as the resonant cavity to take maser action from microwaves to visible wavelengths.

Arthur L. Schawlow is a Canadian-American physicist who shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1981 for his contributions to the development of the laser. He was born in 1921 in Mount Vernon, New York, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 1945. He worked on microwave spectroscopy, superconductivity, and laser physics at various institutions, including Bell Telephone Laboratories and Stanford University. He is also a musician, a musician's wife, and a father of four children.
