Austin Briggs ’s journey began in 1908 in Humboldt, Minnesota, where he was born in a railway car, while his father was installing telegraphic instruments in the local station. He began to draw at an early age, and in high school his work attracted so much attention that he was awarded a scholarship to the Wicker Art School in Detroit.
In 2014, the Norman Rockwell Museum received a generous gift of the Famous Artists School Collection from the art course’s owners, Magdalen and Robert Livesey. This vast and diverse donation includes original artwork, ephemera, publicity photographs, promotional items, business correspondence, and course materials. Included in this material was a course book by noted illustration Austin Briggs.
May 24, 2013 · Austin Briggs began his cartooning career in advertising as one of the original Mad Men of New York. This led to his first cartooning gig as assistant to the great Alex Raymond on the Sunday Flash Gordon series. He succeeded him on Secret Agent Corrigan and also was the first artist on the daily Flash Gordon series. He died in 1973.
