Lieberman met his first wife, Betty Haas, at the congressional office of Senator Abraham Ribicoff (D-CT), where they worked as summer student interns. They married in 1965 while Joe Lieberman was in law school. They had two children – Matt and Rebecca. Betty, who is also Jewish, later worked as a psychiatric social worker.
In 1973 and 1978 she was a member of the U.S. Helicopter Team, competing in the World Championships. Betty was also founder and first member of the Aspen Chapter of The Ninety-Nines (International Organization of Women Pilots), and in 1984 was inducted into the Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame.
