Cadwallader Colden Washburn (April 22, 1818 – May 14, 1882) was an American businessman, politician, and soldier who founded a mill that later became General Mills. A member of the Washburn family of Maine, he was a U.S. Congressman and governor of Wisconsin, and served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War .

Cadwallader Colden Washburn was an American businessman, politician, and soldier who founded a mill that later became General Mills. A member of the Washburn family of Maine, he was a U.S. Congressman and governor of Wisconsin, and served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War.
In 1854, Washburn was elected to Congress as a Whig. He was reelected twice more as a Republican, serving in Congress with his two brothers-one from Illinois and the other from Maine. He was a commissioned a Colonel in the Civil War, fighting in numerous battles including the Battle of Vicksburg.
