Spoilers ahead for the first two episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power!

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a prequel story in an age that is filled with other such prequels as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars: Andor, Better Call Saul, and so many others. While prequels can fill in important gaps in the universe of the stories we love, they also must deal with the fact that we simply know a lot of what comes next in regards to the fate of characters, the world, etc. and must find new ways to surprise and engage us.

With The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which is a prequel to the prequel that was The Hobbit, the team behind the Prime Video series believe they have found a way to avoid some of the pitfalls other prequels have fallen into, and one of the biggest reasons why is due to the vast time difference between the tales.

“If you think about our present day and what's outside our windows versus ancient Rome, there’s a big difference,” Weber said. “But one of the things that we talked about a lot was wanting to be sure the show stayed accessible to people who were non-fans and hadn't read the books or seen the movies as those who are diehard fans.

“So, I think the writers and showrunners did a remarkable job of keeping the on-ramp open and providing those access points in stories that are really relatable to a story about best friends or a mother and a daughter or a father and a son or a husband and a wife, so that people could feel connected and find a way in, even if they have never been a part of Middle-earth before.”

This tightrope walk was shown in full effect during The Rings of Power’s second episode when Theo comes upon a mysterious object that looks like a broken sword. Without any prior knowledge, this object is simply a mystery that begs an answer. However, those who have read the books may start theorizing that its importance may be something even greater we won’t spoil here.

“It's one of the lovely, layered aspects of the show that we're doing is you can come to this with no knowledge and still enjoy a story that I think is appealing and dramatic and engaging, or you can come to it having read every page 50 times,” Greene said. “And I think there's still a depth there because J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will challenge you to an equal knowledge.

“It's again, a really lovely playpen of a show for people from all necks of the woods, all levels of experience to come and come join it. I think everyone will watch Theo and that object and everyone will have a different reaction, which is cool. There's no wrong or right version of that.”

As for Theo, who was created specifically for The Rings of Power, Weber took some time to talk about his motivations and who he is as a person, and we’ll leave it up to you to see if this adds to or takes away from your theories regarding the sword.
