Carlina began her career in afterschool programming, working with children at some of New York City’s highest-needs schools. She went on to serve her local community, creating and organizing initiatives for older adults and homeless New Yorkers as Director of Programs and Services at Good Old Lower East Side (GOLES), a non-profit focused on social justice.
Biography. Carlina Rivera represents the 2nd Council District which includes the diverse neighborhoods of the East Village, Flatiron, Gramercy Park, Rose Hill, Kips Bay, Murray Hill and the Lower East Side. During her time in the Council, Carlina has already introduced and passed legislation related to sexual harassment, immigration, criminal justice reform, affordable housing, small business survival, and bicycle safety.
Carlina Rivera (born January 3, 1984) is an American politician who represents the 2nd district of the New York City Council since 2018. She is a member of the Democratic Party . The district includes portions of the East Village , Gramercy Park , Kips Bay , Lower East Side , Murray Hill and Rose Hill in Manhattan .
Carlina Rivera was born and raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Growing up in Section 8 housing with a single mother who emigrated from Puerto Rico to Brooklyn, she has an intimate understanding of the issues everyday New Yorkers face. Whether it’s living paycheck to paycheck, taking on the burden of student loans, or navigating unemployment benefits during times of economic instability, Carlina has lived it.

She and her husband, Jamie, live just north of New York 10th’s boundaries, but she is running as a native daughter of the Lower East Side’s working-class Latino precincts eager to continue fighting for her neighbors.
