The Church of Saint John the Baptist, then the only Catholic church in Savannah, became the Cathedral. Bishop Gartland enlarged the building with an addition measuring 25 by 60 feet, and repaired the hurricane-damaged roof. He rededicated the Cathedral on June 26, 1853.
April 2020. With the decree dated April 22, 2020, Pope Francis bestowed on the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist the tile of “Minor Basilica” as an honor recognizing the historical significance, architectural beauty, and liturgical renown of our church.
Vigil Mass – 5:30 pm. Reconciliation – 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM & 4:15 PM to 5:00 PM. Sunday: 8 AM, 10 AM * & 11:30 AM (Nursery available for the 10 am Sunday Mass) Incense is used at 10 AM Mass. We do not have a Latin Mass at the Cathedral. Latin Mass is held every Sunday at 1 PM at Sacred Heart Church 1707 Bull St.
