Flash (Alan Arkin) was once a major league pitcher at the top of his form. Then he started drinking. Though he's now homeless, he suddenly gets a chance to play minor league ball in Minnesota, but he has to pay his way there. He takes to selling watches on the street, where he meets Emily (Carol Burnett), a music teacher of little talent who does a flamboyant busking routine for extra cash.
