In 1526 Lucas Vásquez de Ayllón founded what is believed to have been the first white European settlement in South Carolina, but this Spanish colony failed within a few months.

It was founded by eight nobles with a Royal Charter from King Charles II and was part of the group of Southern Colonies, along with North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, and Maryland.
After years of political debate surrounding the proprietary system, King George II established South Carolina and North Carolina as separate royal colonies in 1729. In addition to large numbers of enslaved Africans, South Carolina was one of the few British colonies in North America where an American Indian slave trade flourished.
