When Don Gibson signed on with RCA Victor in 1957, he was already a veteran of ten years in the music business. Born Donald Eugene Gibson in 1932 in Shelby, North Carolina, Don Gibson started playing music with some pool-hall buddies when he was sixteen.
Gibson released the song first as a single. Less than a year later, in April 1958, he included it on his album Oh Lonesome Me. Many bands have had chart success with this song.
