Her mother, Fadhuma Abukar Haji Hussein, a Benadiri (a community of partial Yemeni descent), died when Ilhan was two. She was raised by her father and grandfather thereafter. Her grandfather Abukar was the director of Somalia’s National Marine Transport and some of Ilhan’s uncles and aunts also worked as civil servants and educators.
