Fort Monroe is a former military installation in Hampton, Virginia, at Old Point Comfort, the southern tip of the Virginia Peninsula, United States. It is currently managed by partnership between the Fort Monroe Authority for the Commonwealth of Virginia, the National Park Service, and the city of Hampton as the Fort Monroe National Monument.
Its 400-plus years of rich history have made Fort Monroe a unique and diverse place to explore. Surrounded by water, the location has long been chosen by military forces as a strategic point from which to protect our country. Fort Monroe was started in 1819 and largely completed by 1834. Between the engineers building the fort and the Artillery School of Practice based at the fort in those years, many officers and their families rotated through Fort Monroe.
This timeline will be updated as we continue to learn, but truly begins over 10,000 years before the arrival of the English with the occupation of Indigenous peoples.
