Gerhard Domagk. (1895—1964) Quick Reference. (1895–1964) German bacteriologist and pathologist awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1939 for his discovery of the antibacterial effects of Prontosil, the first sulphonamide drug. Domagk was born in Brandenburg (now in Poland) and trained in medicine at the University of Kiel.
The Igefa laboratory department in which this research was carried out is under Professor Gerhard Domagk, who planned and directed the investigations involving experiments on animals. The chemists Dr. Mietzsch and Dr. Klarer, working in close collaboration with Domagk, provided various chemical preparations for these investigations.
