Family Life. Nesting for ornate box turtles typically occurs at the beginning of the summer, with hatching at the end of the summer. They are not communal turtles and tend to have home ranges of two to three acres.
Facts. Henry Vilas Zoo has partnered with Monarch Watch, a program run through the University of Kansas to create, conserve, and protect monarch butterfly habitats. There are Monarch Waystations at the zoo, with the sites providing milkweed plants, nectar sources, and shelter for monarch butterflies as they migrate across North America.
Henry Vilas Zoo is accessible to guests with ADA-defined service animals, but for the safety of our zoo animals, the zoo doesn’t allow therapy animals or pets.
