Apr 25, 2024 · Isaiah, prophet after whom the biblical Book of Isaiah is named, a significant contributor to Jewish and Christian traditions. His call to prophecy about 742 BCE coincided with the beginnings of the westward expansion of the Assyrian empire, which Isaiah proclaimed to be a warning from God to godless people.
Themes and Theology. Isaiah is a book that unveils the full dimensions of God's judgment and salvation. God is "the Holy One of Israel" (see 1:4; 6:1 and notes) who must punish his rebellious people ( 1:2) but will afterward redeem them ( 41:14,16 ).
ISAIAH ī zā’ ĕ ( יְשַֽׁעְיָ֣הוּ, Yahweh is salvation ). The first of the major prophets in the Eng. Bible, the first of the latter prophets in the Heb. Bible, the largest and prob. the most universally cherished of the OT prophetical books. The prophet Isaiah is mentioned repeatedly in 2 Kings and three times in 2 Chronicles.
Isaiah speaks out against corrupt leaders and for the disadvantaged, and roots righteousness in God's holiness rather than in Israel's covenant. Isaiah was one of the most popular works among Jews in the Second Temple period (c. 515 BCE – 70 CE).

The first 12 chapters of the book of Isaiah focus on the prophet’s vision of judgment and hope for Jerusalem. It all begins as Isaiah accuses the city’s leaders of covenant rebellion, idolatry, and injustice, especially towards the poor. God will judge the city by sending other nations to conquer Israel.
