- 01:27Israeli forces kill Hamas gunmen in West Bank raidReuters VideosSTORY: Israeli forces killed five Palestinians in an overnight raid in the occupied West Bank, including four fighters from the militant group Hamas. That’s according to Israeli and Palestinian officials on Saturday. Hamas confirmed that four of the men killed during the raid near the city of Tulkarm were from its al-Qassam armed wing. The Palestinian health ministry said their bodies had been taken by the Israeli military. There was no information about the fifth man, whose body was too disfigured for immediate identification. During the raid, the Israeli army leveled a two-story house with a bulldozer in an operation that lasted more than 12 hours. According to Palestinian Health Ministry records, nearly 500 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces or Jewish settlers in the West Bank or East Jerusalem since Oct. 7. That’s when Hamas militants attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and abducting 252 others, according to Israeli tallies. Health authorities in the Hamas-ruled enclave say more than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's seven-month-old assault on the Gaza Strip. Palestinians want the West Bank and Gaza, which Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war, as the core of an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital. U.S.-backed talks to reach an agreement between Israel and the Palestinians have been stalled for the past decade but the Gaza war has raised pressure for a revival of efforts to reach a two-state solution.11 hours ago

- 01:35Waste is piling up in Gaza, bringing misery and hazardsReuters VideosSTORY: Abou Mohammed walks past a makeshift landfill, less than 500 feet from his home in central Gaza. With the conflict between Israel and Hamas now in its seventh month, domestic waste has been piling up. Some municipalities have been left with little choice but to find new dumping grounds like this. Mohammed says the dump's proximity to his home has him worrying about the health of his family. "This street was completely empty. We did not suffer like this before. The municipality used to be active, but after the war and the aggression that occurred - it ceased its operations. This waste here has brought diseases. Our children are suffering from various ailments that we have never seen before, such as skin pimples and rashes. Personally, I returned from the clinic just an hour ago. There were numerous cases, including my child who had a fever. The doctor said that it was the result of the pollution here." Youssef Hammad is a municipality worker. The area is not a designated dumping zone, he says, but there was little choice after road blockages stopped them from reaching the official landfill. Hammad also warned of the environmental hazard it poses. It could attract insects and stray animals, he says, and could potentially contaminate the groundwater. Aid agencies warned in February that the majority of people had no access to clean drinking water and that sanitation services were wholly ineffective, with none of Gaza's wastewater treatment systems working.1 day ago

- 02:06Turkey to stop trade with Israel until Gaza ceasefireReuters VideosSTORY: Turkey has become the first of Israel's key partners to halt trade over the conflict in Gaza. Trade Minister Omer Bolat said on Friday (May 3) Ankara would not resume the trade with Israel until a permanent ceasefire and humanitarian aid for Gaza are secured. This was Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan: "All of the West is working for Israel. Starting with America, they are all working for Israel. All these means are being mobilized to unfortunately condemn the waifs and strays, the poor and the have-nots of Palestine, to death in the face of Israel's bombs. We could not have remained patient in the face of these, so we took our steps. There was a trade volume of $9.5 billion between us." Israel's Foreign Minister Israel Katz criticized the suspension, saying it breaks international trade agreements, and calling it "how a dictator behaves." The militant group Hamas, which rules Gaza, praised the decision as brave and supportive of Palestinian rights. Last month, Turkey curbed exports of steel, fertilizer and jet fuel among other products over what it said was Israel's refusal to allow Ankara to take part in aid air-drops over Gaza. All remaining trade is now halted. Turkey has denounced Israel's military campaign in Gaza and sent thousands of tons of aid for Gazans. This week it said it would join South Africa's genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. Turkey's commercial ties with Israel had prompted a domestic backlash and hurt the ruling AK Party in local elections in March. Turkish exporters with firm orders are now looking for ways to send their goods to Israel via third countries, four export company owners told Reuters. They said the decision had caught them by surprise.2 days ago

- 00:41Police seen charging into Portland State UniversityReuters VideosSTORY: Officers entered the Portland State University library on Thursday morning, where demonstrators had barricaded themselves since Monday (April 29). Several dozen protesters ran out of the building as a phalanx of officers in riot gear rushed over to arrest them. Police made more arrests later on Thursday night as demonstrators attempted to retake it. A university spokesperson described it as a "very fluid situation." The protests across U.S. universities follow the deadly Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel by Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip, which killed 1,200 people and saw dozens taken hostage, and an ensuing Israeli offensive that has killed about 34,000, according to Palestinian authorities, and created a humanitarian crisis.2 days ago
