The brewery became the largest in Minnesota by 1860, producing 1,200 barrels annually and shipping them as far south as Tennessee. It was restructured as the St. Paul Brewing Company in 1898 before being sold to Jacob Schmidt soon after in 1900.

Soon Jacob Schmidt, a brewer from rival Hamm's Brewing, took over as the company’s master brewer. The brewery became popular almost immediately and began competing directly with Hamm’s, making Schmidt a well-known icon on the city's west side.
Jacob Schmidt Brewing Co. opened in 1900 and closed in 1920 it was open for 20 years. Items from breweries of this age tend to be more common and less valuable than some breweries. Early items can still be valuable as can rarer types of items.
Schmidt was brought in as a partner and in 1884 he became the sole owner. He continued to run the successful company below the bluff until 1900, when a major fire destroyed the plant. He then removed the firm to the West End, where the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company remained for decades.
