Feb 17, 2014 · While its namesake, Missouri-born James Cash Penney was a famous mercantilist, he also was passionate about agricultural research. To that end, in 1952 he donated one of the world’s most respected dairy herds to establish CAFNR’s Foremost Dairy Research Center, west of Columbia. Six decades later, Penney’s vision is still alive at the working farm.
James Cash Penney, born in 1875, left his childhood home in Missouri when he was in his early twenties and moved to Colorado. He entered the dry goods business and, with partners, opened his first store, the Golden Rule Store, in Kemmerer, Wyoming, on April 14, 1902. Penney was successful for many reasons; chief among them was his work ethic.
