Jumaane D. Williams ( / dʒuˈmɑːni / joo-MAH-nee; born May 11, 1976) is an American activist and politician who has served as the New York City Public Advocate since 2019. He is a former member of the New York City Council from the 45th district, which includes East Flatbush, Flatbush, Flatlands, Marine Park, and Midwood in Brooklyn .

Jumaane Williams has served as New York City’s Public Advocate since 2019. Prior, he represented Brooklyn’s 45th District in the New York City Council from 2009-2019. Jumaane is a first-generation Brooklynite of Grenadian heritage.

Jumaane was elected New York City Public Advocate in 2019 on a platform of truly affordable, income targeted housing, anti-gun violence measures, fair policing, equity, and social justice issues. In the City Council, Jumaane passed nearly 70 bills to help build a more equitable, sustainable, and livable New York.
