When Konrad I of Glogów Duke of Glogów was born in 1228, in Silesia, Poland, his father, Henrique II El Piadoso Piast, was 33 and his mother, Anna Přemyslovna, was 25. He married Salome of Greater Poland in 1249. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 2 daughters.
In 1177, under the rule of Konrad Spindleshanks, the youngest son of High Duke Władysław II the Exile of Poland, the town of Głogów had already become the capital of a duchy in its own right. However, when Konrad died between 1180 and 1190, his duchy was again inherited by his elder brother Bolesław I the Tall, Duke of Wrocław.

In the mid-13th century, when the Duchy of Głogów was formed, on the initiative of Prince Konrad I of Głogów, a castle was built in the north-west corner of the town. Initially, it was a wooden building with a free-standing brick tower, located at the ferry by the Odra. In 1291, during the great fire of Głogów, the castle burnt down.
