Louis Riel (/ ˈ l uː i r i ˈ ɛ l /; French: [lwi ʁjɛl]; 22 October 1844 – 16 November 1885) was a Canadian politician, a founder of the province of Manitoba, and a political leader of the Métis people. In 1844, this area was known as the Red River Settlement. Riel is best known for leading the Red River Resistance in 1869–70 and the North-West Resistance in 1884–85. He fought on behalf of the Métis.
