Luc Montagnier, French research scientist who received, with Harald zur Hausen and Francoise Barre-Sinoussi, the 2008 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. Montagnier and Barre-Sinoussi shared half the prize for their work in identifying the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of AIDS.

In 1983, he led the team of investigators at the Institut Pasteur in Paris that described a novel virus now named human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
