In 1983, he led the team of investigators at the Institut Pasteur in Paris that described a novel virus now named human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
French Nobel laureate Luc Montagnier died on Feb 8, 2022. Montagnier was jointly awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the discovery of HIV with his colleague Françoise Barré-Sinoussi. Though renowned for his scientific contributions, Montagnier became a polarising figure later in life due to his controversial views.
