Early life. Hindenburg was born in Posen, Prussia, the son of Prussian junker Hans Robert Ludwig von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg (1816–1902) and his wife Luise Schwickart (1825–1893), [1] the daughter of physician Karl Ludwig Schwickart and wife Julie Moennich.

His mother, Luise nee Schwickart, was the daughter of a doctor, who won an Iron Cross for his services in the battle of Kulm. Both his parents worked together to provide Paul with a strong body and mind, belief in God and boundless love for their country and the king.
August 1893: Hindenburg's mother, Luise Schwickart dies. 15 August 1896: transferred to Koblenz/Rhein where he serves as VIII. Army Corps chief of general staff; promoted to Generalmajor (major general) .
