While Montpelier is the smallest of the fifty state capitals, the gold-domed Vermont State House is one of the most notable state capitol buildings. Built in 1833, it is also one of the oldest capitol buildings in the United States. The current building is the third state house on the same site.
Montpelier is a very compact town. Drivers are very courteous to pedestrians at the frequent cross walks you find in the downtown area.
