Muscle Shoals, section of the Tennessee River, in Colbert and Lauderdale counties, northwestern Alabama, U.S.; it was formerly a navigation hazard but is now submerged by dams. Mussels were abundant in the area, and the name given to the shoals was an obsolete form of the word mussel.
