Napoleon II (Napoléon François Joseph Charles Bonaparte; 20 March 1811 – 22 July 1832) was the disputed Emperor of the French for a few weeks in 1815. He was the son of Emperor Napoleon I and Empress Marie Louise, daughter of Emperor Francis I of Austria. Napoleon II had been Prince Imperial of France and King of Rome since birth.
Napoleon II, also known as the Aiglon, was the only son of Napoleon I and Marie-Louise. He became French emperor for a few days in 1814 and 1815, but died in 1832 in Vienna.
Napoleon II remains of symbolic significance in the context of the story of the Bonaparte family and their place in European history. As the recognized head of the family, he gave hope to Bonaparte supporters that one day a Bonaparte might rule again.
Napoléon II was born in Paris in 1811. In 1814, Napoleon I was defeated during the War of the Sixth Coalition and then forced to resign by his own officers. Napoleon I originally wanted Napoleon II to succeed him, but that was rejected by the coalition. Napoleon II and his mother went into exile in Austria, and Napoleon I was exiled to Elba.
