The Bowditch House has national significance as a National Historic Landmark. It is the historic home of Nathaniel Bowditch, famed scholar, mathematician, navigator and businessman, and author of The New American Practical Navigator, first published in 1802.

In 1802, Captain Nathaniel Bowditch completed the work prior to his voyage aboard the Putnam, a journey made famous by his uncanny navigational skill at landing her in his homeport of Salem, Massachusetts, on Christmas Day. That story is a display of Captain Bowditch’s commanding mastery of navigational skill and courage.
