5 days ago · About. Oakwood Cemetery was originally established on 10 acres as the City Cemetery in 1839, the same year the City of Austin was established within the Republic of Texas. Today, the oldest municipal cemetery in the city has more than 23,000 burials on 40 acres and hosts a beautifully rehabilitated 1914 Chapel that serves as the Visitor Center.

The Chapel was completed in 2018. The Oakwood Cemetery Chapel was constructed in 1914 by Austin architect, Charles Page. It sits within Oakwood Cemetery, which is a City of Austin Historic Landmark, a registered Historic Texas Cemetery, and a National Register of Historic Places site.
Oakwood Cemetery. The oldest cemetery in the City of Austin, Oakwood is located southeast of the intersection of IH 35 and Martin Luther King Blvd. Its earliest recorded burial occurred in 1841, although the oldest surviving grave marker dares to 1842.
