Born to an aristocratic family, he retired from the Prussian army as a general in 1911.

May 29, 2018 · Hindenburg, Paul Von (1847–1934), German field marshal and president.Member of an aristocratic Prussian family, Hindenburg saw action as a junior officer in 1866 and 1870–71 and retired in 1922 as a corps commander. After the victory at Tannenberg in August 1914, Hindenburg became a national symbol.
Paul von Hindenburg shot to fame after the Battle of Tannenberg in August 1914. He was Germany’s national hero of wartime, soon eclipsing the Kaiser. Appointed to the Supreme Command in 1916, he increasingly took on a political role. His myth survived the military collapse of 1918.
