A stunning example of baroque architecture and a symbol of Venice's miraculous survival of the plague, the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute is a white-stone church with a domed octagon and exuberant statuary. The interior is flooded with light from a high dome and features a 12th-century icon of the Madonna of Good Health, Titian's ceiling frescoes and Palma il Giovane's paintings.
Longhena’s masterpiece, the Church of Santa Maria della Salute (1631/32–1687) at the entrance to the Grand Canal in Venice, was commissioned by the republic in thanksgiving to God for deliverance from the plague of 1630.
