Dec. Senate Square or Senaatintori is part of the oldest section of Helsinki. The Square and its immediate vicinity is the site of many of the city's most important historical and cultural landmarks. Among the notable buildings around the Square are the Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, and the University of Helsinki’s main building.
The Senate Square and its surroundings form a unique and cohesive example of Neoclassical architecture. The square is dominated by four buildings designed by Carl Ludvig Engel between 1822 and 1852.
