Premise. Shogun ( English: / ˈʃoʊɡʌn / SHOH-gun; [1] Japanese: 将軍, romanized : shōgun, pronounced [ɕoːɡɯɴ] ⓘ ), officially sei-i taishōgun (征夷大将軍, " Commander-in-Chief of the Expeditionary Force Against the Barbarians"), [2] was the title of the military rulers of Japan during most of the period spanning from 1185 to 1868. [3]

Shōgun (1975) is James Clavell’s historical novel fictionalizing key events and figures of 1600 Japan as the Azuchi–Momoyama period headed towards its end to usher in the Edo period. The third book published, and the first chronologically placed, in Clavell's six-volume Asian Saga, by 1980 had sold six million copies worldwide.
