The Groundlings is an American improvisational and sketch comedy troupe and school based in Los Angeles, California. The troupe was formed by Gary Austin in 1974 and uses an improv format influenced by Viola Spolin, whose improv techniques were taught by Del Close and other members of the Second City, located in Chicago and later St. Louis.
Alumni. These people were Groundlings. They built this place, literally and figuratively. Many of them still actively teach and perform at the theatre. It's a pretty impressive group of funny people, and we're proud to say they got their start on the Groundlings stage. Alumni are listed in the decade during which they retired from the Main Company.
The Groundlings School landed its own 5000 square foot home in 2015, on the corner of Melrose Avenue and Poinsettia. With over 8000 improv and sketch comedy students per year, The Groundlings has become the pre-eminent training ground for comedy in Los Angeles and beyond.
Groundlings comedians drive a vehicle for human emotional processing and our brand of comedy is a language in which opposing communities establish dialogue through a mutual decision to come unarmed.
