Anxious to see another world outside of her native Austria, Katrin Koerber (Greta Garbo), the daughter of a medical professor, marries British bacteriologist Walter Fane (Herbert Marshall) and moves with him to Hong Kong. There, however, Walter's dedication to his work leaves Karin lonely and bored, and she is soon courted by dashing British attaché Jack Townsend (George Brent).
