Aug 23, 2023 · TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen renewed her pledge to strengthen Taiwan’s self-defense on Wednesday as she visited a war memorial from the last time Taiwan and China battled. Tsai, visiting the outlying islands of Kinmen where the conflict was fought 65 years ago, commemorated those who died.
The presidency of Tsai Ing-wen began on 20 May 2016 when Tsai Ing-wen was inaugurated as the seventh and current president of the Taiwan. Tsai, a member of the Democratic Progressive Party, took office following her landslide victory in the 2016 Taiwan presidential election over Kuomintang opponent Eric Chu and People First opponent James Soong.

Tsai Ing-wen is a Taiwanese politician who has been serving as the president of the Republic of China since 2016. A member of the Democratic Progressive Party , Tsai is the first female president of Taiwan. She served as chair of the DPP from 2020 to 2022, and also previously from 2008 to 2012 and 2014 to 2018.
