The university was declared a full-fledged, independent university in 1950, and the name was again changed to the University of the Orange Free State. In 1993, it adopted a system of parallel-medium tuition. However, the university decided to make English the primary medium of instruction in 2016.
UFS in Focus. Visit. The University of the Free State (UFS) has a proud history as one of the oldest, most respected institutions of higher education in South Africa. It opened its doors in Bloemfontein in 1904 as the Grey University College, with six students in the Humanities.
