As far as power metal goes, I like Nightwish, Kamelot, Epica, Pathfinder, Blind Guardian, Symphony X, Within Temptation and Ayreon. Epica or Therion coyld be on Seconds but really far from Haggard. for a power metal band.. They're not very good stories, but it's still original alternate world fantasy set to great music. The band blends film score-style symphonic and baroque-inspired arrangements with virtuosic power metal. Check out The Emerald Sword for a good taste of what they're like. Also great: Unholy Warcry

I admit, some of the bands listed here may or may not always be classified as Heavy Metal, but that’s the problem with genres, I guess. Regardless, together with Power Metal bands, it is the leather studded army of Heavy Metal bands that produced the majority of Christmas songs.
No, symphonic metal will never be mainstream but that's because it's still metal. Some bands like Within Temptation may dabble in pop but most don't. Power metal is well in Europe too. In the US Kamelot recently sold out House of Blues in Orlando, not to mention they usually sell out NY, LA, and Seattle venues.
