IMO when people think 'Pirate music' they are usually thinking about the sound of a highland jig. Folk-genres are any kind of modern music that borrows from or takes after a traditional music format. Pirate bands are usually just leaning into Celtic folk rock while playing the traditional Hollywood pirate character.
