Biography. While best known for his work on the popular TV sitcom "Newhart," character actor William Lanteau got his start in theater. After serving in the Army during World War II, Lanteau took to the stage, making it onto Broadway by 1949 as part of the cast of the long-running farce "At War With the Army."
With his unusual gaunt features and intense expression, William Lanteau made a career out of playing eccentrics and character roles. His role as town leader Chester Wanamaker on the Newhart show was the most visible part in a career of more than 30 years on stage, screen, and television.
