SAINT-REMI, ABBEY OF. Former benedictine Abbey in Reims, France (Latin, S. Remigius Remensis ). As early as 550 the funeral chapel of St. remigius of reims in the Christian cemetery on the outskirts of Reims was served by a community of clerics under the jurisdiction of the bishop.
The abbey, a pilgrimage church built around the tomb of Saint Remi, is an outstanding example of medieval architecture: it was the largest Romanesque building in northern France before being transformed with spectacular sobriety during the Gothic era.
The cathedral, former Abbey of Saint-Remi, and the Palace of Tau were added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1991. On his 74th Pastoral Visit, Pope John Paul II visited Reims on 26 September 1996 for the 1500th anniversary of the baptism of Clovis.
