    • 1. (1921–89), Russian nuclear physicist and civil rights campaigner; full name Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov. Although he helped to develop the Soviet hydrogen bomb, he campaigned against nuclear proliferation. He fought for reform and human rights in the former Soviet Union for which he was sentenced to internal exile 1980–86. Nobel Peace Prize (1975).
