In the course of two generations only, the family of Ibelin became a prominent family with much power over the kingdom of Jerusalem and Cyprus. Balian married Maria Comnena, the widow of King Amalric I. She was the heiress to Nablus, so Balian, after the marriage, ascended Nablus.
