Jun 21, 2023 · Berat is a city in Albania. In 2008 it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as it is a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman town. It is one of the country's most beautiful towns, and is known as the "town of a thousand windows".
Berat sits beneath the snowcapped Mount Tomorr, a holy mountain for Albanians, along the banks of the River Osum. Berat Castle rises above on a hill on the eastern bank of the river. The combination of a hillside fortified town with a backdrop of mountains and river makes for a picturesque location.

Berat (pronounced; Albanian definite form: Berati) is the ninth most populous city of Albania and the seat of Berat County and Berat Municipality. By air, it is 71 kilometres (44 miles) north of Gjirokastër, 70 kilometres (43 miles) west of Korçë, 70 kilometres (43 miles) south of Tirana, and 33 kilometres (21 miles) east of Fier.

- Explore Berat Castle. The long brushstroke of chestnut-coloured rooftops that make up Berat’s historic centre is painted through the Osum River valley.
- Admire the relics at the National Iconographic Museum. The Onufri National Iconographic Museum (Muzeu Kombëtar Ikonografik Onufri) was established to safeguard a collection of 200-plus icons and artefacts salvaged from the ruins of churches in Berat and further afield.
- Go inside one of Berat’s Byzantine churches. On my first visit to Berat, I completely missed out on seeing the Byzantine churches. Despite reading all about them at the Onufri Museum, I had no idea that some were still standing – and moreover, that they are open to the public.
- Explore the historic Mangalem Quarter. The river valley that runs through Berat dissects the city into two precincts: Mangalem (Mangalemi) and Gorica.
- Take a free walking tour of Berat. The Berat Free walking tour is awesome and definitely worth considering, especially if you are in Berat only for a day or two.
- Wander around Mangelem. The historical part of Berat is actually divided into 3 distinctive parts – Mangalem, Gorica and Kalaja, the castle grounds. All of them are inhabited, were built during different periods and are very unique.
- Walk through The Gate of the Pasha. Now we can slowly start making our way towards the Berat Castle. But before you reach this point stop for a moment at the front of Gate of the Pasha at the foot of the hill.

Feb 24, 2024 · A visit to Berat is definitely one of the best things to do in Albania and a nice contrast with the country’s Roman and Illyrian past on one side, and the popular beaches on the other. Together with Gjirokaster, this is where the country’s Ottoman heritage shines.
