Jun 27, 2018 · A little history of genetically modified food. Genetically modified food actually began before recorded history. Farmers from prehistoric times selected certain plants and animals to put in their crop- those that produced the most crop- while purposefully not selecting others.
So why the difference in the attitude? Keith Lindsey, a plant scientist at Durham University who sits on a panel charged with advising the British government on GMO, points out that the initial reception of GM food in Europe was actually positive, but the relationship quickly soured due to a combination of suspect science and media sensationalism.
To better understand why GMOs were initially created, we have to take a look at the evolution of crop modification and how we got the foods we eat today. Farmers have intentionally changed the genetic makeup of all the crops they have grown and their livestock since domestic agriculture began 10,000 years ago .
