Woese is famous for defining the Archaea (a new domain of life) in 1977 through a pioneering phylogenetic taxonomy of 16S ribosomal RNA, a technique that has revolutionized microbiology.

  2. Jan 30, 2013 · Woese began sequencing fragments of 16S ribosomal RNA from every microorganism that he could get his hands on, using RNA 'fingerprinting' — a method developed by British biochemist Fred Sanger.
