Chances are, they’ll say something about the impact a school makes on the young people who attend it. Do students feel safe and cared for? Are they being challenged? Do they have opportunities to play and create? Are they happy?
The quality of a school goes beyond its name, location, or reputation. An education institution succeeds when it supports every learner every day, offering opportunities for each and every learner to reach further. One hallmark of a good school is that it continually strives for improvement.
Successful schools define leadership broadly. Leadership is distributed — to principals, teachers, school counselors, community members, and others in the building — and decision-making is a shared endeavor. In these schools, leaders (regardless of job title) meet high standards of practice and are supported in their development.
A good school has: • Strong and professional administrators and teachers • A broad curriculum available to all students. • A philosophy that says all children can learn if taught, coupled with high expectations for all students. • A school climate that is conducive to learning. A good school is safe, clean, caring, and well-organized.
